Project Description:
Canoga Park is the oldest high school in the west San Fernando Valley. The Visual and Performing Arts building has significant exterior and interior historic character-defining features.
This project consisted of the Remodel of a historical theater building and the remodel of the oral art auditorium also re purpose of a workshop to a dance studio. Scope included interior improvements, new seating, a new theater lighting system, a new AV system and control booth, and accessibility upgrades for the interior spaces, including the stage area. In addition, the exterior accessibility improvements provided additions of two (2) changing rooms/restrooms in the back of house staging.
The accessibility improvements for interior and exterior spaces were challenging due to requirements to preserve the historical significance of the building. One of the exterior improvement challenges was to provide accessibility to the Assembly Hall lobby level without intruding upon the historic front façade of the building.
Our solution was to reopen an infilled door opening, recreate the door at the side of the building, and situate a ramp to take advantage of the side door and avoid having the ramp interfere with the front façade.
